Three Lessons I’ve Learned This Year

This year has been a transformative one for me, teaching me some invaluable lessons about life, work, and self-care. These lessons have not only reshaped my approach to daily living but have also brought a sense of peace and purpose that I didn't know I was missing.

1. Embracing Slow Living

The first and perhaps most profound lesson I’ve learned is to stop rushing through life. I used to constantly chase the next project, the next phase, or the next goal, always believing that the next thing would bring me happiness. It felt like I was in an endless race, never truly satisfied or present. But with time, I realized that joy doesn’t come from reaching a destination—it comes from experiencing the journey.

By slowing down and focusing on the quality of each moment, I've found a calmness that I never thought was possible. My anxious heart is learning to rest, and for the first time, I’m content with where I am. I no longer feel like I’m missing out by not rushing forward. Instead, I’ve found peace in embracing the present, even if it’s imperfect.

2. The Power of Silence

The second lesson is the power of silence and stepping away from distractions. I used to spend so much time on social media, binge-watching shows, and filling my days with endless noise to avoid facing my thoughts and feelings. It was easier to distract myself than to confront the emotions I had been running from.

This year, I made a conscious choice to reduce my screen time and spend more quiet moments reading, writing, and connecting with nature. Facing my fears and working through them has been one of the scariest yet most rewarding experiences of my life. I wish I had started sooner, but I’m grateful to have learned this now rather than later. Silence has allowed me to rediscover parts of myself that I had been avoiding, and I feel more whole because of it.

3. Understanding Rest

The third lesson that has truly impacted my life is understanding what rest really means. As a Christian, I’ve practiced taking a Sabbath—setting aside one day a week for rest—but I’ve come to realize that rest goes much deeper than just taking a day off. Rest is about balance—physical, mental, and spiritual.

I’ve learned to say no more often, to be mindful of the projects I take on, and to avoid situations that drain my energy. Every day, I make small decisions to either burn my fuel or replenish my soul. This awareness has made a huge difference in preventing burnout. While no day is perfect, taking intentional steps to prioritize rest has become essential to my well-being.

These lessons—slowing down, embracing silence, and understanding rest—have brought me to a place of peace and balance. I’m excited to continue growing, knowing that the journey is just as important as the destination. In this season of life, I’m choosing to embrace the unknown with an open heart, content with where I am and eager to learn even more.
